Tips to Avoid Getting Sick This Season
by Fran Allen, CNP
I’m not sure about you but just about everyone around me is coming down with some sort of cold or flu right now and I am not about it! Here are a few of the strategies I use to avoid the cold going around and feel good!
1. Supplement Support
When I notice people around me getting sick, I usually turn to a few supplements to help keep my immune system strong. Vitamin C is my first line of defense, I like to make sure I’m getting lots of it naturally through fresh fruits and vegetables . I also take a few extra capsules during the day to keep me feeling good. Vitamin C is so great to support our immune system and also helps our body adapt to stress if we’re feeling run down.
Herbs are also great to include into your immune support too. I include Oil of Oregano into my routine as soon as I notice something going around. It’s a powerful antibacterial and antiviral and works as an amazing protective and preventive measure. I usually gargle a few drops in water in the morning or before bed. Be warned, it does tend to burn.
2. Rest is Best
I always notice higher rates or colds and flus after the seasonal time shifts. The changes in light, temperature and season can really throw off our natural rhythm and make us more vulnerable to getting sick. When we aren’t getting enough rest, our immune system cannot function properly and makes us easy targets for bacteria and viruses in our environment. If possible, I try to rest more during these times to help strengthen immunity.
3. Soups and Smoothies
I always try to give my digestive system a bit of a break during this time of year. I make an effort to include more soups, stews and smoothies into my diet. When we prepare foods by blending or simmering, it helps to break down nutrients and makes it easier to digest. Our body then uses less energy to absorb nutrients. We use that excess energy and nutrients to boost our immunity. I always make sure to include a wide range of fruits and veggies in as many colours as possible to get plenty of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals to protect and support my body.
Here is my go to immune boosting smoothie. It tastes great and is loaded with a ton of immune boosting nutrients. Give it a try and let me know what you think!
